The broad principles of the grantIf you're a first home buyer, the good news is that the government has introduced a number of incentives to help you enter the property Market! First home buyers across Australia may be eligible for the Federal Government's First Home Owner Grant (FHOG) - which is a one off tax free $7000 gift from the Government. As long as you and/or your spouse are a first home buyer above 18 years of age, and an Australian citizen or permanent resident, you'll most likely be eligible for the grant. The grant is administered by each state and can differ depending on each states respective legislation. An eligible home must be occupied by the applicant(s) as their principal place of residence within 12 months of settlement or completion of construction of the home. There are minimum periods of occupancy required by jurisdictions. Stamp duty concessions apply for properties worth $385,000 or less.
